The Nationalists

Anyone interested in Irish history will enjoy The Nationalists, a story with a backdrop of the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War.

The story opens with Tony McAnthony meeting Angela O’Sullivan in the GPO during the Rising. Imprisoned after the Rising, Tony must fight for the woman he loves. He is forced to make hard, life-changing choices when Lucy, Angela’s best friend, is raped by the Black and Tans, the hated British auxiliary forces. Tony must now choose between the pen and the gun. Angela is taken aback by what he decides, and as a headstrong Kerry woman she goes her own way. Their paths will collide again later.

Father John Troy also has difficult choices to make. His decision to render aid to rebels lands him in prison and on a collision course with Rome, the Irish hierarchy and fellow priests. The Rising, of course, was more than a military thing. A cultural revolution took place in tandem. The Nationalists explores this aspect as well including the Abbey Theatre. The story interweaves factual and fictional characters – men like Eamon de Valera and Michael Collins.

The story isn’t completely set in Dublin but moves to Kerry, Wales and London and moves on from the Rising to the elections of 1918, the Black and Tan War and the Irish Civil War.

Exile

Exile continues the story of The Nationalists as Tony McAnthony, the journalist, settles into his new life in America and the timeline advances through the roaring twenties, the thirties, the war years, and the Kennedy years in the sixties and seventies.

Many of the characters that appeared in The Nationalists will also play a role in this new work, in particular, that of Pairic O’Toole who left soldiering behind to become a Franciscan and who finds himself incarcerated in Auschwitz during the war years.

New characters are also introduced like Big Emily, a teacher in the US with a new vision for education but who finds herself thwarted by the effects of the Depression.

Exile is a story about the Irish people, but not exclusively so, and paves the way for the third book in this trilogy: The Irish Diaspora.

Orphans

A descendant of the fabled Children of Lir, twelve-year-old Larry Lir has a curse hanging over him from that period of Irish history. The secret of how to dispense with the curse is lost because Lir is an orphan, and only his father could have told him how to lift the ancient curse that hangs over male heirs.

Some claim that Lir is older than his years, and others whisper that he has dark, black magical powers. Whatever the truth of that, he continues to work in the PI Agency that his parents bequeathed to him.

When three Cuban orphans appeal to Lir for help, he finds things in common with them, and he takes their case pro bono.

In doing so, he has set himself up for a battle of wills against Da Silva and his gang of foreign agents, a battle that will bring about the ultimate betrayal, and it will transpire that the ruthless Da Silva is also an orphan.

Set for the most part in Ireland can Lir’s ingenuity can win the day in a story that carries important messages about basic press freedoms and human rights.

The book shows the independent spirit that dwells within children and the battle of triumph over evil.

Vigilis

Ten years after the crucifixion of Jesus, Rome awakens to the threat of Christianity and appoints Marc Procus, a renowned Vigilis, to investigate the new movement and to quiz anyone remotely connected to it, including Pontius Pilate.

Hauled from examining the cold case of Julius Caesar, Marc Procus has been summoned and tasked with tracking down all leading elements of the new Christianity movement, which has been spreading its tentacles all over the known world.

Procus embarks on a series of perilous sea journeys throughout the Mediterranean – an area known to the Romans as Mare Nostrum. Our sea.

On the Greek island of Crete, he encounters his first Christian family and is humbled by their simple way of life. His next port of call brings him into conflict with Pontius Pilate, the stubborn ex-governor of Judea responsible for the death of Jesus Christ.

His travels then take him to Jerusalem, where once again he finds himself humbled by the new religion. As the story develops, Procus finds himself on the verge of betraying Rome.

Meanwhile, in Rome, plots are afoot to depose the emperor and establish a new rule. Alerted by the betrayal of Procus, the life of his wife and children becomes precarious, and suddenly they are in danger.

Can Procus get back to Italy in time to save his family?

Darerca

Darerca is the sister of Saint Patrick and a holy woman in her own right.

It’s said that she married twice and that her seventeen sons became bishops, and that her daughters also followed saintly paths. The tale opens in the late 4th century before sweeping into the 5th and closing in the 6th just as the monasteries were growing stronger.

The story is an expansion of my earlier work ‘Paddy’ and indeed may incorporate that fine work.

Pacific Deeps

Ordered across the Pacific Deeps, a Virginia-class attack sub, the USS Obama, captained by Russell Grant, has orders to proceed towards North Korea and to monitor the rogue nation from the nearby Yellow Sea.

Unfortunately for the Obama, a killer is loose within the sub, and it becomes a race against time to stop either a madman or a deep plant put in place by the North Koreans. Grant orders Jennifer Hobbs, a newbie within the ranks but an ex-homicide investigator, to look into the killings, and she is soon joined by two NCIS specialists flown in from the mainland.
