March 3rd is International Writers’ Day. The Union is celebrating by holding a member-only virtual open mic night on Zoom. All members are invited to participate. Each signed-up member will have 5 minutes to read up to 800 words from any piece they choose which can be published or work in progress — extracts from a short story or a novel, a poem, a piece of memoir, an essay will all be welcome.
Sign in for the event will be at 6.45pm on Zoom with the event starting at 7.00pm and running until 8.30pm. Readers will be called on in the order of the sign-ins. First come — first served. There will be a waiting list and we will try to include as many readers as possible within the time.
During the Zoom event members are invited to put links to their published work in the chat box and those links will be circulated to all participants after the event. This is a good opportunity to get your work out there in front of other members.
The session is a celebration of writing, not a critique group. We would ask participants to treat each other with kindness in the comments. If you have nothing good to say, say nothing. Prospective readers are encouraged to pick pieces that are suitable for a general audience and should warn the moderator when signing in of any triggers in the piece — extreme violence etc.
We look forward to seeing you all as we celebrate International Writers Day!
